Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Education (PESSPA)

At Thorntree Academy, we believe being physically confident and competent enhances the experiences of PESSPA, which inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport within the local area and wider world.

It is our belief that PESSPA provides a range of broad and balanced experiences that form the basis for lifelong sporting and recreational activity.

Physical education lessons will provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident and learn a progression of skills. School sport provides opportunities to compete in a range of sports and develop skills in a competitive manor. Physical activity develops resilience in a way that supports their mental health, fitness and physical well-being.

Your School Games:

We Are Platinum!

We have worked extremely hard over recent years to grow and maintain engagement in PESSPA ensuring a minimum of 60 active minutes for every child, every day whilst creating positive experiences designed to reflect the motivation, competence and confidence of our pupils.

What PESSPA looks like across Thorntree Academy:

Physical Education:

We believe we offer a rich, broad and balance curriculum that allows children to be confident and competent. At Thorntree Academy, we believe a high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident and competent in a way that supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as teamwork and respect. PE plays an important role in recognising the value of exercise and a lifelong interest in a range of activities in the community around them. It also seeks to promote enthusiasm for physical activity and challenge.

School Sport:

This is our learning beyond PE lessons. We have half-termly sports clubs designed to provide a broad range of activities that build on the skills and knowledge learned from PE lessons. In addition to this, every KS2 child will participate in outdoor and adventurous residential activities.

Physical Activity:

This is everything else! Across the Academy, we like to be as active as possible. From activities including Active Mile, Just Dance and even Cosmic Yoga, our children are able to be physically active for sustained periods throughout the day. Active playtime and lunchtimes have been a hit with our children thanks to the investment in playtime boxes and the introduction of play leaders. All pupils leaving Thorntree Academy in Y6 will have completed swimming lessons delivered in our local area, by qualified professionals. This is usually completed in Y3 and Y4 with top-up sessions available in Y5 and Y6.
